Pensions auto enrolment – are self-employed left behind?
It is now 4 years since pensions auto enrolment was introduced and current data from National Employment Savings Trust (NEST) shows that over 6.5 million people have enrolled with less than 10% opting out. However, there is a concern that self-employed people are potentially being left behind as NEST analysis shows that only 17% of self-employed workers are currently saving into a pension. This means that the 83% of self-employed people without a pension are missing out on tax relief and investment returns, as well as potentially not meeting their aspirations for retirement.
